Beginner Training Guide
On this page, you'll find a detailed 12-week training plan designed to help complete beginners steadily improve their darts skills. This program emphasizes building a solid foundation, enhancing consistency and accuracy, and developing effective checkout strategies. Each week includes specific drills, challenges, and recommended rest days to prevent burnout and ensure sustainable progress.
Your Progressive Darts Journey: A 12-Week Plan
This plan is structured into three progressive phases, each building upon the skills learned in the previous one. Remember to focus on consistency over perfection in every session!
Phase 1: Weeks 1–4 – Building Your Foundation
Focus: Establishing a solid stance, consistent grip, fundamental throwing mechanics, and basic target acquisition.
Week 1: Stance & Balance
This week is all about finding your comfortable and stable throwing position.
* Drills:
* Shadow Throwing: Spend 10 minutes each day practicing your stance and throwing motion without darts. Focus on smooth, repeatable movements.
* Balance Drill: Stand in your throwing position for 1 minute at a time, concentrating on maintaining perfect stability without swaying.
* Goal: Develop a consistent, balanced stance that feels natural and repeatable.
Week 2: Grip & Release
Now that your stance is solid, we'll refine how you hold and release the dart.
* Drills:
* Grip Practice: Throw 50 darts daily, with your primary focus being a relaxed, consistent grip and a clean release.
* Paper Plate Test: Attach a paper plate to your dartboard and aim for it. This helps you concentrate on releasing the dart smoothly and consistently towards a larger target, reducing "wobbling" darts.
* Goal: Eliminate dart wobbling and achieve a smooth, consistent release.
Week 3: Targeting Single Numbers
Time to start aiming for specific targets on the board.
* Drills:
* 20-to-1 Drill: Throw one dart at each number, starting from 20 and working your way down to 1. The goal is to hit each number in sequence.
* Bullseye Challenge: Throw 30 darts at the bullseye. Award yourself 5 points for the inner bull and 3 points for the outer bull. Track your score.
* Goal: Consistently hit your target number's wedge with 50% of your shots.
Week 4: Scoring Basics
This week introduces basic scoring and getting accustomed to hitting higher-value areas.
* Drills:
* 101 Game: Play solo 101, aiming for a "double-in, double-out" format (though for now, focus on just hitting doubles to start and finish).
* T20 Focus: Throw 10 sets of 3 darts specifically at the Triple 20. Record your total score for each set.
* Goal: Consistently average 30 or more points per round when playing 101.
Phase 2: Weeks 5–8 – Consistency, Accuracy & Finishes
Focus: Tightening your dart groupings, improving your ability to hit doubles and triples, and learning fundamental checkout strategies.
Week 5: Grouping Your Darts
The key to higher scores is throwing darts close together.
* Drills:
* Cluster Challenge: Throw 3 darts at the Triple 20. After each set, measure the distance between the darts. Your aim is to reduce this spread to 2 inches or less.
* Repeat Throws: Practice hitting the same single number three times in a row (e.g., Single 16, then another Single 16, then a third Single 16).
* Goal: Significantly tighten your dart groupings, aiming for a 25% improvement in consistency.
Week 6: Doubles Practice
Doubles are crucial for finishing games. This week hones your double-hitting skills.
* Drills:
* Double Trouble: Rotate through specific doubles: Double 16, Double 8, Double 4, Double 2, and Double 1. Throw 3 darts at each.
* Double-Out 301: Play solo 301, focusing only on hitting a double to finish the game.
* Goal: Successfully hit three doubles in a row by the end of the week.
Week 7: Triples & Combinations
Expand your scoring potential by targeting triples and strategic combinations.
* Drills:
* T19/T20 Alternator: Alternate throwing 10 rounds between the Triple 19 and Triple 20. This improves your ability to switch targets accurately.
* Cricket Practice: Focus on "closing" the numbers 15 through 20 and the bullseye in a game of Cricket.
* Goal: Successfully close three numbers in Cricket in 12 darts or fewer.
Week 8: Checkout Basics
Start learning common two-dart finishes to close out legs.
* Drills:
* Two-Dart Finishes: Practice specific checkouts like 32 (Double 16), 40 (Double 20), and 36 (Double 18).
* Around the Clock Doubles: Hit each double from D1 to D10 in order.
* Checkout Generator (Level 1 - Easy): Use our Checkout Generator (found [link to your generator page here]) set to Level 1. This will give you simple, common finishes to practice regularly.
* Goal: Be able to check out scores of 40 or more within 3 darts.
Phase 3: Weeks 9–12 – Advanced Techniques & Pressure Play
Focus: Mastering checkout strategies, developing mental focus, and preparing for competitive scenarios.
Week 9: High-Volume Scoring
Build stamina and consistency in high-scoring areas.
* Drills:
* 100 Darts at T20: Throw 100 darts solely at the Triple 20. Track your total score, aiming for 1,000 points or more.
* Cricket vs. Bot: Play 10 games of Cricket against a dart bot (if your dartboard or app has one). Focus on consistently scoring and closing numbers.
* Goal: Consistently average 45 points or more per dart when practicing on the Triple 20.
Week 10: Checkout Mastery
Refine your ability to finish games with more complex checkouts.
* Drills:
* 121 Game: Start at 121 and aim to check out in 9 darts or fewer. This forces you to think about different routes.
* Random Checkouts: Use a dart app or our Checkout Generator (set to Level 2 - Intermediate) to generate 60–100 random finishes. Practice these to broaden your checkout knowledge.
* Goal: Consistently check out scores of 70 or more within 3 darts.
Week 11: Pressure Scenarios
Simulate match pressure to build mental toughness and perform under stress.
* Drills:
* Sudden Death: Simulate "must-hit" doubles. For example, pretend you're on Double 16 to win the match and throw until you hit it.
* Progressive Challenge: Start a game of 301. After each leg, reduce the starting target by 50 points (e.g., 301, then 251, then 201, etc.).
* Checkout Generator (Level 3 - Challenging): Use our Checkout Generator at Level 3. This will throw more complex and varied finishes at you, simulating real match situations.
* Goal: Successfully win 5 out of 10 sudden death scenarios.
Week 12: Mock Competition
Put all your newfound skills to the test in a simulated match environment.
* Drills:
* Best of 5 Sets: Play full matches (e.g., 501, double-in/double-out) against a friend or a high-level bot.
* Peer Review: Have a friend or experienced player watch you throw and provide constructive criticism on your mechanics and approach.
* Goal: Consistently average 60 points or more per dart in a full match simulation.
Your Daily Darts Routine Template
To maximize your progress, follow this simple routine most days you practice:
* Warm-Up: 5 minutes of light shadow throws to get your muscles ready.
* Drills: 20–30 minutes intensely focused on the specific drills for your current week's goal.
* Cool-Down: Finish with a fun, relaxed game like "Around the Clock" to wind down.
* Rest Days: Ensure you take 2 rest days per week (e.g., Wednesdays and Sundays) to prevent burnout and allow your body to recover.
Key Tips for Sustainable Progress
* Track Your Progress: Keep a detailed notebook or use a darts scoring app to log your scores and progress for each drill. Seeing your improvement is a huge motivator!
* Film Your Throw: Use your phone to record your throwing motion from different angles. Reviewing the footage can help you spot inconsistencies or areas for improvement that you might not notice otherwise.
* Adjust Difficulty: If a drill feels too easy, don't be afraid to add constraints. For example, for "Around the Clock Doubles," you could make it "only doubles count." If a drill is too hard, break it down into smaller, more manageable steps.
By the end of these 12 weeks, you'll have built a robust foundation in darts mechanics, developed impressive consistency and accuracy, and gained valuable insights into matchplay psychology. Remember, consistency always trumps perfection in darts!
